His quest leads him to the forbidden study, where he discovers his father was not killed but was betrayed and imprisoned by the Silvermoon Court. The Court's Queen, Vera, plans to create a "False Moon God" using the essence of Gray Shadow's bloodline, needing Cain himself as the final vessel.
Cain’s path intersects with outcasts and prisoners: Ronan, his father's old guard; Nora, a prisoner marked with a Blackmoon Seed; and Marcus, a defiant survivor. Together, they challenge the Court’s tyranny. He learns his mother, Selena, a Court Moon-blood, is still alive, kept in a crystal coffin at the heart of the Blackmoon Well.
The Court sends its Inquisitor, the White Crow, and Cain’s jealous cousin, Aldric, to hunt him down. Aldric steals the wolf fang, a blow that nearly breaks Cain. But in the valley of the dead, Cain earns the respect of fallen wolves and finds a secret passage into the Court's core.
