In a rural village during the 1980s, Naomi Hartwell works five years to support her fiancé, Benjamin Sterling, as he prepares for the exam. After he becomes the "top scorer," he breaks off their engagement condescendingly. Naomi marries Gabriel Rockwell, a shepherd whom everyone considers a fool. In the end, the "top scorer" turns out to be someone else with the same name as Benjamin. He, in fact, scored bottom. Meanwhile, Naomi and Gabriel start their new life together.
