Eliot, a subway train conductor, develops a profound interest in Valeri—known as Marco—who frequently appears in the same carriage. (Both are devastatingly handsome European and American men.) Marco captures Eliot's attention with his flawless professional demeanor and his elusive, unpredictable manner. After months of observation, Eliot decides to approach Marco, and the two build a relationship. However, Eliot gradually discovers that Marco's true identity is a member of the Valeri family, one of Europe's largest smuggling networks, which runs illegal trafficking operations through Eurostar trains. Eliot's colleague Lena warns him not to get too deeply involved, but Eliot cannot pull himself away. When the Valeri family comes under threat from the Eastern European syndicate Vor KO, Eliot finds himself reduced to a pawn in their game. He is forced to choose: either face Vor KO's manhunt side by side with Marco, or betray him and expose his crimes. After a wrenching internal struggle, Eliot decides to come forward and denounce the crimes of Marco and the Valeri family, demanding police protection for his safety. In the end, Eliot is placed under witness protection. Though he has gained what is called "freedom," he feels an immeasurable emptiness and pain in the depths of his soul.
