On the night Hugo Ford gets engaged to his girlfriend of five years, Rae Nash, she ends up blackout drunk at a bar with her first love, Jay Bush. After losing a dare, Rae, in the dead of winter, prank-calls Hugo, claiming she is fallen into Star Lake. Hugo and her family rush to the scene. That night, Rae's clueless parents and brother drown in the lake, while an exhausted Hugo barely makes it back to shore. Over the phone, as Hugo confronts her in rage, Rae and her friends burst into laughter, insisting it was just a game of dare.
